Cape Winelands reports major progress in containing Wemmershoek fire

The Cape Winelands District Municipality says they have made significant progress overnight in suppressing a fire in the Wemmershoek area near Franschhoek.

The municipality says rainfall has contributed to firefighting efforts.

Firefighters have been battling to contain the blaze for the past eight days.

Fire Services spokesperson, Anesca Roodt, says they’ll remain on high alert for any flare-ups.

“Early-morning reconnaissance will be conducted to assess the impact of the rain on the status of the fire. The findings will guide operational planning for the day. Windy conditions are expected, and firefighting teams will remain on high alert for potential flare-ups. Mopping-up operations are continuing in areas that have already been contained.”
