An officer conducts an inspection on scholar transport in Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal on 12 January 2026.
KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Siboniso Duma says they will continue with road safety inspections until the end of this month to ensure the safety of school children.
Sixty-three scholar transport vehicles have failed recent roadworthiness inspections conducted in the province.
Inspections are being conducted by the Road Traffic Inspectorate and members of Operation Shanela.
The province has around 77 000 learners using scholar transport.
Duma says the inspections will not end with the opening of schools.
“We’re proceeding with the process of inspecting these taxis and buses until the end of January because the main and the thrust is to ensure that we’re still on the road. They are adhering and every inspection has been done to the last end and those (that) were taken back to the pound are back after being serviced.”

Last week, The Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport also conducted roadworthy tests on scholar transport vehicles ahead of the reopening of schools.
The department urged operators to ensure that their vehicles are inspected for safety in line with the National Road Traffic Act.
