Springbok captain Siya Kolisi underlined that before his side focuses on back-to-back Rugby Championship titles they first need to beat Argentina in round six of the tournament at Twickenham in London on Saturday.
Kolisi felt the need to pump the breaks on fixating on records and point out that there is still a match that needs to be won, and it is not a foregone conclusion by any stretch of the imagination.
The Boks stand to defend their rugby championship title for the first time in their history and win a sixth title as well.
When a team is collecting trophies and achievements like this Springbok team is, there is a propensity to start thinking it is all inevitable.
That’s where the Boks are called upon to bring everyone back down to earth and try to reiterate that the focus has to be on the match coming up and not the achievements that could come if the result goes the Boks way. Siya Kolisi was at pains to hammer home this point in his captain’s press conference.
“To think about all these records now is not the time I think we just want to focus on the performance but i think ja we will take time to think when the job is done but I can’t be thinking that far ahead,” Kolisi says.
The Boks have a lot to put right, because while they demolished Argentina in Durban, the match was still in the balance up until the hour mark.
“Last week was tough we were only able to pull through on the 60 minute mark so our focus is just making sure we focus on the moment and exactly what is in front of us we cant control the result so we are just going to make sure that we play as hard as we can and the magnitude of the game doesnt change the way we play the way we approach the game where we know exactly what we want to do so we are just looking forward to the battle and what comes after we will see after that,” Kolisi elaborates.
The Springboks are looking for their third win in a row in this year’s edition of the Rugby Championship. The beginning of the defence of their regional title did not go to plan, and after their loss to the All Blacks, assistant coach, Mzwandile Stick, says the team needed to change their mindset.
“Since Eden Park against the all blacks when we lost that game im talking about now after losing that game probably for us to stay in the competition we had to make sure we win all the games so our mindset since then has been more like in that world cup mindset of playoffs ,” Sticks says.
So there is a sixth Rugby Championship title there for the taking, and a first defence of their title as well. The important thing to remember is the Boks have it all in their hands, to achieve what they have not yet.
