Parliament’s ad hoc committee, which is investigating wide-ranging allegations of threats to national security, has discussed how classified information presented to the committee will be handled.
The committee is still in the process of thrashing out its terms of reference.
It was established following allegations by KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, of serious corruption in the criminal justice system.

The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party made a submission that a protocol should be agreed on, regarding how classified and sensitive information will be dealt with.
A decision was made that the existing protocol for how Parliament handles classified information will be followed.
Parliament’s legal advisor, Andile Tetyana, says, “Documents in a safe set aside for this purpose, with 2 different locks – Speaker and the national secretary of parliament – and nominees ensure safekeeping of keys. In order to gain access, both key bearers must open the safe and take the documents to the designated area for only full members of the committee.”
