City Power pauses power restoration over illegal connections

City Power says they will be halting the restoration of power supply in certain areas of Johannesburg until it verifies that at least 80% of customers in that area are purchasing electricity legitimately.

According to the power utility, this decision follows a notable increase of illegal connections and meter tampering, which has placed extreme pressure on it’s infrastructure.

City Power says it will conduct comprehensive meter audits before restoring power in affected areas.

“Expensive hardware, such as mini-substations and transformers costing millions of rands and often taking weeks to source, are being repeatedly damaged, most often through overloading caused by unlawful connections,” says Spokesperson, Isaac Mangena.

He says that at the moment, they are inundated with cases of damaged ground-mounted and pole-mounted transformers, and are already facing backlogs in sourcing replacement equipment due to the escalating rate of damage.
