State accuses Ntanzi of fabricating assault claims in Meyiwa trial

In the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, the state has accused Bongani Ntanzi of fabricating his claims of assault. Ntanzi, the accused number two in the case, maintains that he was tortured and suffocated before being forced to sign confession statements after his arrest in June 2020.

Five men are on trial at the High Court in Pretoria for the 2014 murder of Senzo Meyiwa.

Ntanzi alleges that he was subjected to torture, including being suffocated with a plastic bag – allegations he says led to him signing documents he had no knowledge of. But the state, through vehicle tracking data, argues the evidence does not support his version of events.

“We therefore put it to you that this incident you say happened near the staircases is merely a fabrication,” says State Prosecutor George Baloyi.

However, Ntanzi stands by his version. “Here is proof before the court, the document before the court. My lord, had this vehicle movement not been requested, I would have been seen as someone lying, because Sergeant Mogane denied that we went to the garage and that he saw Jonathan. Here is the proof.”

Ntanzi also refutes claims from the state that one of the vehicles spent time in Alberton near a garage due to mechanical problems, stating all that time was spent there as he was being tortured.

He is expected back on the stand Tuesday morning.
