Eswatini police say three suspects wanted in connection with the murder of a police officer in Schoemansdal, Mpumalanga, a week ago have been killed in Eswatini.
The three were traced to the Sishweleni region. Two of them opened fire when they noticed police.
The Royal Eswatini Police say they returned fire and fatally wounded the two.
They say the third suspect shot himself before he could be arrested.
South Africa’s National Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe has praised the cross-border operation between SAPS and Royal Eswatini Police.
“Thursday, early hours of August 14, the Royal Eswatini Police traced these three suspects. The first two suspects were shot at a hideout in the Sishweleni Region is Eswatini. They were fatally wounded as they charged at police who announced their arrival. The third suspect was located in the vicinity. He allegedly committed suicide before police could arrest him.”
Sergeant Lawrence Mtshweni was shot and killed in a business robbery involving seven heavily armed men in Schoemansdal, Mpumalanga on Friday.
According to the police, a suspect was arrested the following day and further investigation pointed to the involvement of the men in Eswatini.
Sergeant Mtshweni will be laid to rest on Saturday in Schoemansdal.
