A family from Rietvlei in Greytown in the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) midlands, whose son has been missing for over two months, is seeking answers. 27-year-old Vukani Zondi is alleged to have disappeared on April 15 when he did not return from an outing with friends.
Vukani’s mother, Khumbuzile Zondi last saw Vukani on April 15.
Her son, who was a student at the technical college, didn’t return home after he had gone out to celebrate with his friends in Greytown,
“His friends came back but Vukani didn’t come back. They didn’t come to tell me that he was not with them. I went to the police to open a case,” she says.
Zondi says she saw CCTV footage of her son being beaten by a group of people, while other footage from the nearby shop shows them taking him into the car.
“After he had disappeared, my brothers went to the area where they were entertaining themselves. They saw him being beaten, but when they came back with police to watch the video, they were told the video is not available. Again, I went to the nearest wholesaler. I saw that fight and I also saw them catching and putting that person inside the car and that person looked like my son,” says Zondi.
She says she is not satisfied with the manner in which the police are handling the case.
“I am not happy with the investigation of the police. They are very slow. It took them almost one month to bring sniffer dogs. Police from Pietermaritzburg arranged the dogs (which) could detect if the vehicle they were travelling in had blood on it or not,” she says.
Meanwhile, Provincial Police Spokesperson, Jay Naicker, says they are investigating a case of a missing person.
“Police in Greytown are investigating a case of a missing person. The victim and his friends left their home at Rietvlei and travelled to go Greytown to celebrate. During the party, the victim and his friends quarreled. Allegedly he refused to leave with them and his friend left without him and he hasn’t been seen since. We understand the family’s frustration. The investigation is being escalated to outlying areas surrounding Greytown. We appeal to his friends and family to come forward should they have any new information that can assist us in the investigation. Detectives will continue to follow any leads that surface during the investigation,” says Naicker.
