SACC calls for full accountability in Dobsonville rape incident

The South African Council of Churches (SACC) has condemned church-related abuse and has called for full accountability in the Dobsonville rape incident.

A church elder is accused of raping a 12-year-old girl in Soweto on Good Friday.

The 56-year-old suspect, who is a member of a men’s prayer group, made a brief appearance in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court.

The rape incident allegedly took place at the man’s home.

The SACC expressed deep pain, outrage, and disappointment.

It says the incident strikes at the very heart of what church members are called to be – people offering a sanctuary of safety, dignity, and love to all, especially the vulnerable.

It has called on law enforcement to leave no stone unturned in insuring that justice prevails.

On Sunday, hundreds of community members embarked on a peaceful march in support of the victim.
