Ntanzi alleges evidence mishandling in Meyiwa murder case

Accused number two in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, Bongani Ntanzi, has accused police of failing to follow proper evidence procedures when confiscating his cellphones.

Ntanzi told the High Court in Pretoria that the devices, taken during his arrest in June 2020, were not placed in an evidence bag or sealed in his presence.

During cross-examination, State Prosecutor George Baloyi questioned him on this.

Ntanzi claims two cellphones were confiscated by the police from his Rustenburg residence in the North West.

Advocate Baloyi pressed Ntanzi on why police would ignore standard procedure when handling exhibits.

Baloyi: You said you had two cellphones taken by police. Were they placed in an evidence bag and sealed in front of you?

Ntanzi: Both phones were not placed inside an evidence bag.

Baloyi: You agree it is standard procedure to bag and seal exhibits?

Ntanzi: Yes, but they did not follow procedure because they wanted to do what they wanted with them.

Ntanzi claims the officers deviated from the norm in order to manipulate evidence.

Baloyi: Why would they deviate from that procedure?

Ntanzi: They were committing a crime themselves, my Lord. There was something they were looking for in my phone which they did not find.

The cross examination of Ntanzi is expected to continue Wednesday morning.
