Retired SAPS commander says breakthrough was made in early stages of Meyiwa investigation

Retired senior South African Police Service (SAPS) commander Vincent Leshabane says during his involvement in the early stages of the Senzo Meyiwa murder investigation in 2015, there were two teams working on the case. He testified that his team made what he described as a key breakthrough in the investigation.

Leshabane, was initially on the state’s list of witnesses, but was not called by the State. He has now been called by the defence team to give evidence in the case. Five men are on trial for the 2014 murder of former Bafana Bafana captain, Senzo Meyiwa, who was shot and killed at Kelly Khumalo’s parental home in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg.

Leshabane told the court that during visits to Kelly Khumalo’s home, he interviewed a neighbour who claimed to have seen two people near the property, which led him to believe that two individuals may have entered the house on the night of the shooting.

“I don’t know their names but the opposite the house. There was somebody who was working at prison. She saw two people next to the danger box next to the house of Kelly Khumalo,” says Leshabane.

On Monday, senior interpreter Aubrey Jonas continued interpreting proceedings after the five accused withdrew their request for his removal.

The Senzo Meyiwa murder trial continues at the High Court in Pretoria with  Leshabane expected to continue with his testimony on Tuesday.
