Mossel Bay undocumented immigrants say unrest left them with nothing

Some undocumented immigrants say they’ve lost everything during the violence in Mossel Bay in the Western Cape last weekend.

Families were displaced following unrest linked to allegations of illegal immigration.

At least 55 structures were destroyed in the Asla Park informal settlement in KwaNonqaba, forcing many to flee.

One of the displaced people, Silvino Chauque, says the attacks have affected both documented and undocumented migrants.

“These people they don’t care if you have documentation, an ID, they just come and hit everyone. They break everything, I’ve got nothing, I don’t even have clothes. The one I got is what I have here, I’m wearing it. It’s better we go back, we’re not safe here and I don’t think I will ever come back here.”
