Mopping up operations under way in Western Cape after recent storms

Mopping up operations are under way in Western Cape communities that were hardest hit by the recent storms.

The Provincial Disaster Management says emergency relief teams are on the ground to help affected people.

Several areas have been completely cut off by widespread destruction caused by the heavy rains and damaging winds.

Eleven people lost their lives and extensive damage to infrastructure has been recorded.

Provincial Disaster Management head, Colin Deiner, says they’re prioritising getting food to people and restoring water supply.

“The main focus of the emergency relief teams in the Western Cape following the floods today will be to provide food to people that are affected in numerous areas across the province. Also to increase the provision of water to areas that have been cut off from water supply which includes the Breede Valley areas in the Drakenstein Municipality, as well as areas in the Garden Route Municipality.”
