File: FA frontline worker wearing medical standard personal protective equipment
General workers in the Lichtenburg based Ditsobotla Local Municipality are calling for their employer to provide them with personal protective equipment.
They remove waste from pit toilets in Coligny but have no gloves, masks or any protective clothing.
The North West municipality is severely cash strapped and is under the intervention of the national government.
Workers say they have never been taken for medical check-ups. They say they have contracted diseases because of the raw sewerage they are exposed to.
“I started to work without any illnesses and were tested I was fine. Now every morning after taking a bath, I start to bleed and there is a strange thing coming out and I do not know what it is,” says one worker.
“I have ten years working here asking for PPE but they are not providing us with protective gear,” added another worker.

Ditsobotla Local Municipality spokesperson, Pius Batsile told SABC NEWS that they are aware of the situation and are attending to it.
“The municipality has been experiencing some cash flow problems. The municipality is busy arranging that the five employees should be taken for medical checkups at the doctors that the municipality is working with. The municipality is also working hard to ensure that we get them relevant PPEs for their work.”
