The families of the late whistle-blowers Jimmy Mohlala and Sammy Mphatlanyane have welcomed the revelations by the suspended Mpumalanga Police Commissioner Daphney Manamela.
In a media briefing on Sunday, Manamela alleged that top police officials manipulated investigations in cases, including those of the two deceased men.
She says that this was done to protect the real perpetrators.
Mohlala’s daughter, Tsidiso, says they will only find closure when the perpetrators are behind bars.
She says, “SAPS has been failing us; the SAPS system is failing us day and night. So the only day I will believe this is the day when we will be at court, and knowing very well that the people who did what they did to our father 15 years ago, they are being handcuffed and they are going to jail. That’s the only day I will say they were telling the truth, but for now, I’m sceptical. I’m actually sceptical about everything because I don’t know what to believe anymore.”
Mphatlanyane’s widow, Pinky, says they have lost confidence in the country’s justice system.
She says, “It is obvious that the politicians are protecting each other because I, for sure, I’m aware that they know the truth, but they never come up and speak on these matters, because they never support the families.”
She adds, “They never want these deaths or cases to come to light and provide us with justice. So I believe what Mama Manamela is saying, and it is painful that she makes mention of the former Minister Bheki Cele, and she makes mention of the national commissioner. Hence, I’m saying the gun that killed my husband is from SAPS here in Mpumalanga.”
