Millions of hectares returned to rightful owners: Nyontsho

Rural Development and Land Reform Minister, Mzwanele Nyhontso, says his department has managed to redistribute 5.9 million hectares of land and restituted 3.9 million hectares to the rightful owners.

Nyhontso was addressing traditional leaders at the Mpondoland Kingdom in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape.

Traditional leaders engaged the minister on various developmental programmes that should be implemented on the coastland of the province.

Nyhontso says litigation is another challenge that delays the redistribution process.

“If a farmer is claimed and the white owners come up with an exorbitant price for that particular land, we would end up negotiating until we go to court. So, all those things are delaying the process, but at least we are trying. So far, from the side of redistribution, we have redistributed more than 5.9 million hectares, and on restitution, 3.9 million hectares of land.”
