Suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi and City Manager Kagiso Lerutla appear at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court in the East Rand on April 28, 2026.
City of Ekurhuleni Manager Kagiso Lerutla’s lawyer says his client presented compelling arguments during the bail application and is not surprised by the court’s decision to grant him bail.
The Boksburg Magistrate’s Court has granted bail of R 30 000 each to Lerutla and suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi.
The pair had proposed bail amounts of R 10 000 and R 20 000, respectively, in their affidavits.
They face Schedule 5 charges, including corruption, fraud and defeating the ends of justice.
The matter has been postponed to next month for further investigations.
Lerutla’s lawyer, Masekela Masenya, says they welcome the court decision.
Masenya says, “Remember, with the scheduled 5 offences, we just need to ensure that it is in the best interest of justice for our client, for the accused person who is in this case, to be released on bail. We have the strong view that indeed we set out proper, strong reasons, fortified with a proper understanding of the law, that indeed it is a good candidate for bail.”
