Farms across Kouga Municipality hit by severe floods

Farms across the Kouga Municipality were hard hit during the heavy rains that ravaged through the Eastern Cape recently.

Commercial farmers are still counting their losses as their fruit trees were submerged and many fields washed away.

Corné Muller, owner of Kwagga Farm says hundreds of workers and farmers were displaced as their homes were damaged.

Muller says, “The impact on our workers will be immense. First of all, we did get in temporary labour for the season because we are now in full swing of season, picking season. We might have to get rid of some temporary labour for now, just because there’s less fruit that can be picked.  And that will also have a knock-on effect, you know, for ongoing where people will move to the Western Cape where that is also impacted with weather. So, yeah, it’s a devastating time for this valley. It’s the impact financially, it’s in the hundreds of millions, and it will take a very long time to recover.”
