Ekurhuleni to review court ruling after Mkhwanazi, Lerutla bail

The City of Ekurhuleni says it is studying the judgment by the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court following its decision to grant suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi and City Manager Kagiso Lerutla bail of R30 000 each.

The City’s spokesperson, Phakamile Mbengashe, says the matter is expected to form part of discussions at an upcoming council meeting, where a way forward will be considered.

He says administrative work will continue despite the ongoing case.

Mbengashe says Lerutla remains on leave, while Mkhwanazi is still under suspension as internal disciplinary processes continue.

“We have noted the judgment. Our legal team will be studying the judgment but from there, we just want the work to continue. Stability is important for us as a city and we hope that these matters will pass. Once the commission is done, we await the recommendations. We will be implementing them. we have always committed that we want to work closely with the Madlanga Commission and law enforcement agencies. But this period is important. We must go through it. It is an opportunity for us to reset our governance in the city and go on the right track.”
