Eastern Cape monitors suspected pig disease outbreak

The Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture says it is closely monitoring a suspected disease outbreak affecting pigs in parts of the province.

Veterinary teams have been dispatched to conduct assessments and collect samples after dead pigs were discovered in Gqeberha.

Farmers have been urged to remain vigilant and immediately report unusual livestock deaths.

Provincial Agriculture Department spokesperson Athule Joka says authorities are still waiting for test results.

“Last week, we sent our veterinary officials to conduct assessments and collect samples. We are currently awaiting results but observing the mortality rate. There are possibilities of african swine fever.”

Joka says African Swine Fever remains one of the possible causes being investigated.

“The disease is not known to affect humans and does not pose a public health risk, but can be severe among pigs.”

The department has warned pig farmers against disposing of dead animals in public areas.

“Farmers are urged to report any sudden illness in pigs to our nearest offices immediately and pig farmers are warned not to dispose of animals in public, as it poses a public health hazard,” Joka.

Authorities say monitoring and testing processes are continuing while awaiting laboratory confirmation.
