Court hears how Vearey, Kinnear allegedly extorted money from Modack

A witness in the trial of alleged underworld crime boss, Nafiz Modack, has testified that the accused informed him that former detective boss Major-General Jeremy Vearey and Charl Kinnear allegedly extorted money from him.

Police Captain Alfred Benjamin Barker, who worked for Crime Intelligence to investigate the underworld, has been under cross-examination in the Western Cape High Court.

Modack, along with 14 co-accused, face more than 100 charges, including the 2020 murder of Kinnear.

Barker told the court that Modack gave him information about corruption, which he said implicated Veary, Kinnear and other high-ranking police officers.

The case stems from money confiscated in a house in Mitchell’s Plain during a police raid.

Barker explains, “We discovered that a statement was issued by General Vearey that the money should be forfeited to the state. But unfortunately, my Lord, there was no such thing. He said that the money should be forfeited to the state. That money never went to any of the books to show that money had been received from the lab.”
