Adv Sello seeks clarity on Mkhwanazi’s absence last month

The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry resumed on Tuesday morning with Advocate Mahlape Sello seeking clarity on suspended EMPD Deputy Chief, Julius Mkhwanazi’s reasons for not appearing before the commission last month, as it had been scheduled.

Mkhwanazi first appeared before the commission in December last year and was due to make his second appearance in January, which was postponed to March and later postponed again due to the death of a close family member.

Advocate Sello says they’ve since determined that the woman who passed away was, in fact, his stepmother and not his biological mother.

“After the postponement was granted, a few days later in the normal course of collation of documents, these documents were then prepared for filing and that’s when we realised that this person happens to be 10 years older than Mr Mkhwanazi and that raised the issue about whether or not Mr Mkhwanazi lied to the commission, misled this commission in an attempt to avoid appearing before the commission and we concluded that he potentially may have done so but we needed to make our own investigations.”
