The Gauteng Education Department says it’s working closely with law enforcement officials to promote safety in all schools in the province.

MEC Matome Chiloane says parents and School Governing Bodies’ members gathered in Eesterust in Pretoria to seek ways of ensuring the safety of learners and educators.

The department’s spokesperson Steve Mabona says they have noted rising concerns of bullying and gangsterism which compromise the safety of learners in schools.

“We are working closely with the police officers, CPF, amaPanyaza so that they can become visible in and around our schools and we want to make sure that there is more of those to make sure that we prevent any criminal activities.

The number is going down during the holidays, we only had five break-ins which amounts to our strategies which we have implemented in and around our schools in Gauteng,” Mabona says.
