Schooling in 3 EC districts suspended due to severe weather warning


The Eastern Cape Education Department has confirmed the suspension of schooling in three districts following a level eight severe weather warning issued by the South African Weather Service.

The Nelson Mandela, Sarah Baartman, and Buffalo City districts have been identified as areas at risk from the severe weather conditions. No evacuations or major incidents have been reported at this stage.

Departmental spokesperson Malibongwe Mtima confirmed the suspension and said precautionary measures had been communicated to all three districts.

“Three Eastern Cape Department of Education districts have suspended schooling for today and tomorrow, 3rd and 4th June 2026, following a warning of severe weather conditions by the South African Weather Service. The three education districts, namely Nelson Mandela, Sarah Baartman and Buffalo City, have been identified as parts of the province to be severely affected by the Level 8 weather warning,” Mtima said.

“Therefore, an urgent communication regarding this weather conditions has been sent to all three districts to take precautionary measures to avoid any loss of life during this period,” Mtima added.
