Teenager sentenced to 25 years for rape, murder of 79-year-old woman

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has welcomed a 25-year sentence imposed by the Western Cape High Court on a 17-year-old offender convicted of the rape, murder and robbery of a 79-year-old woman.

In July last year, the accused brutally attacked the woman on a farm in the Little Karoo.

He was sentenced to 20 years’ direct imprisonment for rape, 25 years for murder and 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances.

The NPA says the accused admitted to targeting the elderly woman knowing she lived alone on her farm.

He unlawfully entered her property, assaulted her and then raped her while she was incapacitated.

He then murdered her using a metal chain.

The court found that despite the accused’s age, the seriousness and brutality of the offences, together with the circumstances in which they were committed, warranted a lengthy custodial sentence.
