MKP requests debate into Parliament’s handling of Phala Phala report

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) says it has submitted a letter to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Thoko Didiza, requesting an urgent debate of national importance on the ruling of the Constitutional Court last week pertaining to the conduct of the Assembly when it voted against the Section 89 Panel’s report in 2022.

This relates to recommendations by the Panel that President Cyril Ramaphosa may have a case to answer with regards to foreign currency stolen from his Phala Phala farm.

MKP Chief Whip, Mmabatho Mokoena-Zondi, says the ruling points to the constitutional responsibilities of ministers of parliament, as well as the integrity of parliamentary processes when dealing with allegations of serious misconduct against the head of State.

Meanwhile, follwoing the ruling, the party has called for Ramaphosa’s resignation, arguing that the allegations undermine the integrity of the office and place undue strain on public confidence in the Presidency and the State.

The party says the judgment reinforces the need for urgent political and legal accountability processes to be pursued without delay.
