Oudtshoorn, Cango Caves road remains closed after rockfall

The Western Cape Infrastructure Department says progress has been made in clearing debris from a significant rockfall on the road between Oudtshoorn and Cango Caves.

The department says that specialist teams are assessing the stability of the mountainside.

The department’s Member of the executive committee, Tertuis Simmers, says that debris is still visible on the roadway.

He also says that engineers are concerned that removing it immediately could trigger secondary rockfalls.

No timeline has been set to reopen the road. Road users have been urged to use alternative routes.
