Parliament still considering no-confidence motion requests against Ramaphosa

Parliament is still considering two requests for motions of no confidence against President Cyril Ramaphosa.  This is according to Parliament’s spokesperson, Moloto Mothapo.

The  uMkhonto weSizwe (MKP) and African Transformation Movement (ATM) have submitted requests to the Speaker of the National Assembly, for motions of no confidence.

Both parties have requested that it should be done via secret ballot.

The requests follow the Constitutional Court ruling on Friday, that an impeachment process against Ramaphosa must be reinstated. The top court found that the rules setting out Parliament’s impeachment process were unconstitutional.

The matter relates to the foreign currency stolen from a couch on Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala farm in 2020. The Speaker, who determines the voting procedure is still considering the matter.

“The MK Party is calling for a secret ballot because members of Parliament must be allowed to vote according to their conscience, without fear, without intimidation and certainly without political pressure from the party structures. A motion of no confidence is one of the most serious constitutional mechanisms available to us in Parliament, so it cannot be reduced to party instructions or political bullying behind closed doors,” says MKP Chief Whip Mmabatho Mokoena-Zondi.
