W Cape strengthens disaster readiness measures ahead of cold fronts

The Western Cape government has strengthened disaster readiness measures ahead of two intense cold fronts expected to affect parts of the province from Sunday to Tuesday.

Provincial Environmental Affairs and Development Planning Minister, Anton Bredell, says disaster management centres across all districts, including Cape Town, are on high alert.

This is as municipalities prepare for service disruptions after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecast heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding.

Bredell has urged residents to stay away from flooded areas and monitor official updates.

Meanwhile, the small towns of Uniondale and Haarlem, outside of George in the Langkloof, are still experiencing power and water challenges.

This is after heavy rain and storms damaged infrastructure this week.

George Municipality’s spokesperson, Chantal Edwards, says they are working towards restoring power to the town.

“Due to the prolonged Eskom power outage in Uniondale, the Municipality is experiencing challenges with infrastructure and communications. George Fire and Disaster Services is putting measures in place to resume communications with Uniondale, and limited communication is now possible. The Eskom power outage and a valve failure are also contributing to there being no water supply in the Uniondale and Haarlem areas right now. The valve failure is being addressed. A generator has been put in place to support the Water Treatment Works.”
