Madadeni hospital CEO summoned over doctor’s alleged patient assault

The KwaZulu-Natal Legislature Health Portfolio Committee has summoned the CEO of Madadeni Provincial Hospital to appear before it next Friday.

The move follows allegations that a doctor at the hospital sexually assaulted female patients.

The doctor is expected to apply for bail in the local magistrates’ court today.

The allegations have raised concern within the healthcare sector in the province.

Chairperson of the committee, Imran Keeka, says the committee wants answers on whether warning signs may have been overlooked.

Keeka says, “The KwaZulu-Natal Health Portfolio Committee is deeply concerned by allegations against a doctor at the Mdadeni Hospital involving serious misconduct involving female patients. This matter is before the courts and we respect the process, but it cannot excuse administrative inaction…

“We have called on the hospital CEO to appear before the committee on the 15th of May to account for what was known, what was done and how patients are being protected. We will ensure that there are no gaps between criminal proceedings and professional accountability.”

The committee says it will monitor developments in the matter while court proceedings continue.
