Eastern Cape floods cause major damage to homes, infrastructure

The speaker of Ndlambe Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape, Andile Marasi, says widespread floods have caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure.

Several roads have also been affected as heavy rains continue to batter parts of the province.

Officials are assisting residents with essentials such as blankets, while assessments of the damage continue.

Marasi says further intervention from government will be needed.

“It is so bad in the sense that we are now on the ground, observing doing an assessment of the situation or how much is the damage so that we can have an understanding of what can be done. For now, we are busy assessing the ground, road, property, the damage that it has caused so we have an understanding of what to take place after all the assessment.”
