Disaster management teams on high alert in KwaZulu-Natal districts

Disaster management teams in Ugu, Zululand, King Cetshwayo and Umkhanyakude districts in the South East and North East of KwaZulu-Natal are on high alert. This after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has escalated its weather warning in these areas to Orange Level 6  meaning there’s a high probability of significant damage.

A Yellow Level 4 warning is still in effect for the rest of the province.

SAWS has warned that a cold front, together with a cut-off low system, is expected to cause heavy rainfall exceeding 80 millimeters, as well as damaging winds.

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) spokesperson  Senzelwe Mzila says the MEC for COGTA has stated that the immediate priority is the protection of communities in low-lying areas and settlements located near rivers and streams.

“Major transport routes, including the N2 and N3 corridors, are being closely monitored for potential flooding, debris and travel disruptions. Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution and follow all instructions issued by disaster management practitioners.”
