IEC holding voter registration campaign at a school
The Electoral Commission (IEC) says it will double efforts to get eligible voters to register for the 2026 local government elections (LGE). This follows the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday that the polls will be held on the 4th of November.

The IEC says it is critical that people register and do so in the ward of the voting district where they live, as there is no provision in these polls to vote anywhere else.
Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Masego Sheburi says the IEC will be launching its election campaign later this month.
“At the heart of that campaign is an attempt for the Commission to contribute to rekindle belief in democracy as still a preferred way of arranging public affairs. We hope with that campaign we will influence voters that are disillusioned to still yet believe in voting as a preferred way of arranging public affairs. That will be a contribution, but it must be met also by the substantive elements of democracy. It must be met by visible, responsive government, visible, responsive service to the party, because that is the only thing that will change voter behaviour.”
