Lamola says ANC condemns US-Israel war on Iran

African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee member, Ronald Lamola says the party condemns the US-Israel war on Iran. This comes as the party led the People’s March in what it calls Defence of Sovereignty and Democratic Gains in Johannesburg to mark Human Rights Day.

Lamola also says the government has implemented measures to curb the impact of rising oil prices.

“With regards to this war, any solution should come through negotiations and through an amicable solution. And with regards to the challenges that will come, with regards to the economy, with regards to the energy sector, with regards to the petrol and so forth, the South African government has already moved in to put measures that must mitigate this imminent crisis because of the challenges that will come out of the war.”

Speaking at the same event, ANC National Spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu says the call for the respect of the sovereignty of South Africa comes at a crucial time.

Bhengu has also reiterated that the country will not be bullied.

“I think it’s indicative of the fact that South Africans, particularly those that have been following developments in the geopolitical environment and the shifts we have been seeing, are aware of the threats to South Africa, often linked to our international relations and cooperation policy. We will not be bullied. We will defend South Africa’s sovereignty with all that we have.”
