Calls for postponement of Khoi and San reburials

Descendants of Khoi and San people whose bodies had been exhibited overseas and who are to be reburied next week in the Namaqualand have called for the reburial to be postponed.

Khoi and San communities say they have not been properly consulted about the process, and they are also unhappy with the service provider appointed, fearing cultural practices will not be observed.

The reburial of the remains of 58 Khoi and San people is to be conducted at Kinderlê near Steinkopf.

The remains were returned from Scotland, where they were exhibited in a museum for decades in violation of their dignity.

Remains that were found at the Iziko museum in Cape Town will also form part of the reburial process.

Khoi and San activist Angeline Engelbrecht says proceedings must be halted to include the people of the Khoi and San in this important decision.

“This burial of the remains of our people must be stopped, and government must come and speak to the people we want to be part and parcel of the decision about the sleep burial. That is our standing point, and we are not going to move.”
