The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johannesburg says it hopes that the newly created position of the Deputy Mayor and the Finance Member of the Mayoral Committee portfolio will be merged to avoid duplication of power.
The party says the duplication of roles would drain the city of millions in public funds which would be better spent on the delivery of basic services.
The African National Congress’s (ANC) Regional Chairperson Loyiso Masuku – who is also the Finance portfolio – has been elected as the city’s first female Deputy Mayor.
The ANC has defended the move saying it is aimed at strengthening governance.
Alex Christians is the DA’s Speaker Designate in Johannesburg.
“So we are hoping that it does happen because we introduced that in Tshwane when Solly Msimanga was the mayor and it worked very well because it avoided duplication to power in terms of the executive. So we will welcome it if it is merged into the MMC of Finance portfolio.”
