UPDATE: Minister Godongwana to step in to stabilise SAPO, SABC

Editor’s Note: The SABC would like to issue a formal retraction and unreserved apology regarding an earlier report in which we stated that Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana had committed to intervening in the financial challenges of Telkom. This was incorrect.

This story has been updated to correctly reflect that the Minister was in fact referring to the South African Post Office, and not Telkom.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has committed to stepping in to stabilise the Post Office and settle the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Sentech bill.

Government’s intervention comes as both parastatals have been grappling with financial strain, with the Post Office even facing the threat of liquidation due to its deteriorating financial position.

Godongwana confirms that Treasury will move first to settle the SABC’s billion rand debt owed to Sentech, a critical step aimed at easing the broadcaster’s immediate financial pressure.

He reiterates that this is one of two urgent matters he is handling.
