Nkabinde Enquiry hears how cops killed a suspect and planted firearm

Crime scene reconstruction and ballistics expert Chris Mangena has told the Nkabinde Enquiry in Pretoria that the brother of an alleged suspect allegedly killed by the Cator Manor police unit in Umlazi in Durban, witnessed officers planting a firearm at the scene.

The unit under the command of former KwaZulu-Natal Hawks head, Major General Johan Booysen is accused of killing members of the Kwa-Maphumulo and KwaDukuza Taxi Associations between 2008 and 2012.

Mangena further told the commission that the officers severely assaulted the victim before they shot him.

“So he was apparently hiding in the other room, they didn’t see him. They tortured this one and they shot him and after shooting him they placed a gun in his hand to pull the trigger. So he can test positive for primer residue.”

“When they did that that’s when the brother screamed shouting and that’s when they realized that there is someone in the room and he came out and by then people were outside. They couldn’t do anything and he was released and he submitted a statement, I just don’t know where the statement is,” adds Mangena.
