SANDF members doing rehearsals in Thohoyandou, Limpopo, ahead of the Armed Forced Day on Saturday
The Department of Defence says more funding is needed to ensure that all members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) are able to carry out their operations. This, as Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has allocated an additional R2.7 billion rand to the department’s budget for the 2026/2027 financial year. Defence spokesperson, Siphiwe Dlamini, says some of the funds will be used for the deployment of the SANDF to various provinces riddled by illegal mining syndicates and gang violence. Dlamini says the SANDF members working to safeguard the country’s borders might face challenges in operating as desired.
He says, “We are happy to receive the little that the national treasury has given us, and we are also happy to note the treasury’s efforts to provide additional funding. However, we still believe more still needs to be done. Remember, we are the custodians of the territorial integrity of the republic, and therefore, a lot of effort needs to go into that area. Without the funding that we need, that is going to be very difficult.”
