Online gambling tax on the cards


Those trying their luck with online gambling may soon have to pay tax on their winnings.

There is a proposal for a tax of 20% on gross gambling revenue generated by online gambling.

National Treasury published a draft national online gambling tax discussion paper for public comment in November 2025.

The department says, “This tax would be in addition to the current taxes paid to provinces”.

The public comment period will close on 27 February 2026.

National Treasury says following receipt of the comments; it will hold a workshop with those who commented.

Treasury documents state that, “A proposal, including any revisions from the consultation, will be included in draft legislation that will be made available for public comment later in the year (2026)”.
