Sibiya questioned about possible conflict of interest with Matlala

Suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner for Crime Detection, Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya, has been questioned about a possible conflict of interest in his alleged relationship with criminal cartel kingpin Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala.

In June 2024, Matlala was awarded a South African Police Service (SAPS) tender.

He attended Sibiya’s son’s engagement party in September in the same year.

Sibiya is being cross-examined at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria.

When asked why he saw nothing wrong with inviting Matlala to his house, he replied: “I would be cautious or maybe apply my mind in having to invite someone [Matlala] that I know that is a service provider in the detective space and I invite him to [my house] me. But the supply chain is a division on its own, which is far from where I am.”

“I don’t even know the people who sit on how tenders are allocated. So I’m far from that space. So I know him as a stakeholder in the police,” adds Sibiya.
