Freedom Front Plus welcomes Malema’s five years imprisonment

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) in Parliament says it welcomes the decision of the Magistrate Court in KuGompo City in the Eastern Cape, for sentencing Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema to an effective five years in jail.

Malema was found guilty on five counts for discharging an illegal firearm in public during the birthday celebrations of the party at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane in 2018.

FF-Plus MP Heloise Denner says this is a lesson to be learned by public officers that no one is above the law.

“The Freedom Front Plus welcomes the sentencing imposed on Julius Malema today. It proves that no one is indeed above the law, not even Malema, even though he tends to think so. Furthermore, article 47 of the constitution stipulates that a person may not serve in parliament if she or he has been sentenced to a prison sentence of twelve months without an option of a fine.”

“This, of course, is subject to the outcome of an appeal of which Malema will certainly apply. But the ff plus will, however, monitor the situation and insist on his immediate removal from parliament should his appeal fail. There is a greater onus on public office bearers to set an example of law-abiding conduct,” adds Denner.
