Rescue teams working to reach five Ekapa miners trapped underground

Rescue teams are still working to reach five miners trapped at Kimberley’s Ekapa Minerals mine almost a week after a mud rush incident.

The men have been stuck underground since last Tuesday. Heavy rain in the city is likely to influence operations.

National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) Kimberley organiser, Lerato Mohatlane, visited the site early on Monday morning and says the drilling teams are making progress.

“We managed to see the drilling team. It updated us in terms of how far they are in terms of detecting the five gentlemen who are still trapped, but what we have come across is that, at least in an hour, they are able to pump out 300 litres. So, we can confirm that the process is running positively, even though it is running slow, but at least there is a high chance and positivity that within two weeks or so, they might get hold of those five gentlemen,” says Mohatlane.
