Suspended Ekurhuleni legal head testifies at Madlanga Commission

Suspended Ekurhuleni Head of Legal and Risk Services Advocate Kemi Behari has taken to the stand at the Madlanga Commission in Pretoria on Monday morning.

Adv Behari has previously been accused of shielding suspended deputy police Commissioner, Julius Mkhwanazi by crafting an internal legal report that cleared him.

Previous testimony has alleged that Behari also received a R600 000 bonus for blocking disciplinary action against Commissioner Mkhwanazi.

Behari says allegations that he received a bribe are shocking and astonishing.

“The main focus here, which I, for me it was shocking, astonishing, in all my career, to come and hear that you’ve received a 600,000-rand royalty money, bribe, however it’s linked. I will deal with that issue, because Chair, that will take me back to where this matter comes through. But that was, for me, I don’t know, I’ve been through a lot, but I’m glad that the opportunity has come for this.”

The Madlanga Commission has in its interim report, recommended to President Cyril Ramaphosa that certain officials from the City of Ekurhuleni including metro police officers as well certain South African police members, must be investigated.
