Madlanga Commission hears that Witness F leaked police information to a civilian

It has emerged that Witness F, who is testifying before the Madlanga Commission, shared sensitive police information with a civilian known as Steve Motsumi.

The shared information pertains to a picture of his application to have fingerprint evidence processed by a particular officer.

An image of the fingerprints was then sent to Motsumi. Motsumi’s name was first mentioned in text messages between KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and the head of the KwaZulu-Natal Hawks Major-General Lesetja Senona.

Commissioner Sesi Baloyi SC put it to Witness F that sharing sensitive police information with ordinary civilians is irregular and unlawful.

“I know speaking for myself but I suspect many South Africans will not sleep easy that police officers share matters, documents that are in dockets, they share them with civilians who have absolutely no interest according to you in matters that are under investigation. I just want to make that comment to you that it is a matter of concern. And I put it to you, it’s irregular and unlawful that you would have shared the contents of a police file with a civilian who has according to you no interest in the matter.”
