FILE | Protestors in Johannesburg called on Glencore to stop exporting coal to Israel.
An activist from the Malaysia Global Sumud Flotilla Nadir Al-Nuri has called for an immediate halt to Glencore’s coal exports to Israel.
He and other pro-Palestine protesters gathered outside Glencore’s offices in Melrose Arch in Johannesburg, condemning the company’s ongoing shipments.
South Africa is the largest coal supplier to Israel.
2025 projections indicated that 55% of the coal imported by Israel comes from South Africa.
Al-Nuri says it is up to the people to come together to stop the exports.
“Glencore and other co-operations fall to the hands of consumers. Their acts upon what the people wants. So they are the ones in power. People are the ones who have the power. The people have to show co-operations today that we will not support those who stand with these criminals, with these warmongers, with these baby killers. We should push them away and tell them we support co-operation with values. We support co-operation who have the ethical means to work in places that do not support this type of manslaughter.”
Meanwhile, Global Sumud Flotilla coordination member also from Brazil, Thiago Ávila, says that there’s still a long way to go to secure peace in Gaza.
“We understand that our task is incomplete. The ceasefire and the Board of Peace created by Trump was never mentioned during real peace. It was never meant to bring sovereignty or self-determination for the Palestinian people. People are still dying; 500 people died since the signature of the ceasefire.”
Ávila adds, “They are still taking over land with what they call the Yellow Line. They are still restricting entry into Gaza. So the task is incomplete. People sometimes get confused to think the genocide is over. But the truth is that for eight decades, Palestinians have been experiencing apartheid colonial state and genocide and ethnic cleansing.”
