Full investigation to be conducted into Doornfontein explosion

The City of Johannesburg’s Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety, Dr Mgcini Tshwaku, says a full investigation will be conducted into Monday’s explosion in Doornfontein in the Johannesburg CBD.

The explosion of a transformer in a storage room in a student accommodation building led to the collapse of an adjacent wall.

Four people, including three security guards and a student tenant, were injured in the incident.

Tshwaku says the surrounding buildings are safe and the area remains secured while authorities determine the cause of the explosion.

“It will be interesting to really remove everything and get close to the transformer itself. Everyone is doing the investigations, but the place is safe and secure. People must not worry. All the buildings around the area are fine. We are going to be working now around the clock just to check if there are not any gas lines underneath. I can assure the people right now that the place has been called and the building has been evacuated.” – Reporting by Thato Letsaba
