Bitou Municipality internal committee to probe Kolwapi gun firing allegations

The Bitou Municipality in Plettenberg Bay in the Western Cape says an internal committee has been tasked to investigate and table a report before the council with its recommendations regarding the shooting incident involving the Deputy Mayor.

This after councillor Nokuzola Kolwapi was seen in several social media videos allegedly firing a gun into the air at her son’s homecoming ceremony in December last year.

Kolwapi claimed that it was a toy gun.

At a recent council meeting, Kolwapi was given seven days to respond to the allegations of discharging a firearm in public.

The Municipality confirmed that as of February 1, no response had been received.

In a statement, it said the Speaker will submit the final report and its recommendations to the MEC of Local Government, Anton Bredell.

It said it was following the procedure of the council to deal with matters relating to its code of conduct and urged the public to be patient so that the procedure is not compromised.

The NPA is dealing with the case and has yet to decide if criminal charges are warranted.
