An 80-year-old man has died after running into difficulty on a kayak at Bloubergstrand in Cape Town. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) says its team attended to the incident after eyewitnesses spotted a capsized sea-kayak.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon says swimmers on a paddleboard assisted the man but could not resuscitate him.
“It appears that local well known and highly respected 80 year old John Flanigan was paddling on his sea-kayak, offshore of Blouberg Beach. The causes of the incident are under investigation. John had recently successfully completed a Robben Island swim and he will be dearly missed by family, friends, the local community, NSRI and lifeguards. Police have opened an Inquest docket.”
