The Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture, Land Development and Environmental Affairs needs over R165 million to assist farmers affected by the recent floods.
About 600 farmers were affected by the heavy rainfall that wreaked havoc in the province.
Provincial Agriculture MEC Khethiwe Moeketsi visited farmers in the Mkhondo Municipality to assess the extent of the damage.
Farmers lost crops, livestock and storage facilities. She says immediate aid will be provided to the farmers.
“We have categorised those damages. We said there are those that are severe that will need funds so that we come and talk to the infrastructure that has been damaged. Some are palms, electrical installations, builder houses and so forth. But there is immediate (damage) that we will do now, that’s why we are here. So, we will be giving seedlings and fertilisers to our farmers so that they continue to produce. And also to other farms, we will assist them to open their access routes. The estimated amount is about R165 million that will assist our farmers,” says Moeketsi.
Meanwhile, the provincial said it needs about R44 million to repair infrastructure damage at its nature reserves.
Some of the tourist attraction sites were temporarily closed due to the recent heavy rainfall but have since been reopened.
